Our Story

  • Mid-1990s: Working in the landscape industry, Kirk Wagner learns of vacation homeowners on Diamond Lake and in the Sister Lakes region struggling to find a design/build landscaper that they can trust to complete their paver and retaining wall projects.
  • 1997: Kirk founds Upstream Waters Landscape. The new company is formed to produce landscape designs and installations at a fair price with employees that can be trusted to perform the work while the homeowners are away.
  • 1997 - 1999: Upstream Waters Landscape focuses almost solely on designs, hardscapes, and plantings. Clients are happy with their outdoor living spaces but have difficulty finding a trustworthy company to care for their new lawns, perennials, shrubs, and trees. Kirk receives multiple requests for lawn care and landscape maintenance services.
  • 2000: Upstream Waters Landscape adds a lawn care and landscape maintenance division that provides full-service planting bed maintenance and lawn care.
  • 2000 - 2016: Both the install and maintenance divisions expand. Installation crews add water feature installation, water feature maintenance, pergola construction, and low voltage landscape lighting installation services. Maintenance crews add fertilization and pest management services. The service area for both divisions also expands to include residential, second homeowners, and commercial clients throughout Berrien and Cass counties in Southwest Michigan.
  • 2017: Changes in the labor force resulted in the closure of the landscape maintenance division. Upstream Waters Landscape discontinues lawn care, leaf removal, fertilization, and pest management services. Bed maintenance and mulching services are still offered on a limited basis.
  • 2017: The installation division continues to offer residential and commercial hardscape, planting, water feature, and outdoor lighting services in Southwest Michigan. The service area expands again to include Granger, Mishawaka, and the Northern neighborhoods of South Bend in Northern Indiana.
