Seat Walls and Columns

A seat wall, also called a knee wall, is more than a wall you sit on. A seat wall can be purely decorative, standing alone in the landscape with all finished sides visible. Or, a knee wall can act as a retaining wall, holding back soil on one side and showing off the beauty of the finished stone material on the other.

Seat Walls and Columns

Yet, there is still more a seat wall can do:

  • Create an outdoor room by dividing off or enclosing part of your landscape. Enhance your seat wall with columns or pillars and create a visual entry point for your outdoor living area.
  • Integrate a seat wall with another feature such as a fire pit, water feature, or outdoor kitchen for overflow seating.
  • A seat wall can be the lower portion of an overhead structure such as a pavilion, gazebo, or pergola.
  • For a raised patio or terrace, a seat wall around the perimeter can keep your company safe and away from the dangerous edge. (Local building codes may still require a railing, which can be incorporated into the knee wall.)

  • Determine early on if sound or other utilities, like gas for a fire element, will be part of the design. If so, the conduits and wiring can be installed within the knee wall during construction.
  • Adding LED landscape lighting to your seat wall and columns enables you to use your paver patio or near by landscaping after dark.
  • Capstones are a somewhat independent element of a seat wall. A capstone in a contrasting color or material, such as bluestone or limestone, is another creative option when designing your wall.

Seat walls average 18 inches in height, but this can vary based on site conditions and design preference. The top of a seat wall should be a minimum of 12 inches wide to give a safe and comfortable place to sit. While there are many options for capstones and wall block materials, smoother surfaces provide a more pleasant place to sit.
